Eastern Macedonia consists of the prefectures of Drama, Evros, Thassos, Kavala, Xanthi, Rodopi. The area has a variety of archaeological monuments, museums, monasteries etc.
In Drama, visit town of Drama, with mansions, Byzantine walls, park statues, museum, many religious muslim and orthodox monuments, forests and rivers in the area. Don't miss the ancient city of Philippi with the sanctuary of Dionysus as well as the cave Maara with the impressive stalactites.
In Evros,the capital city of Alexandroupolis, is a city of modern architecture, with a municipal park, the Lighthouse Beach and the Archeological museum. Evros Delta is the home of many rare birds, while next in Feres village see the aqueducts, the river with the bridge and miniature Byzantine church of Hagia Sophia. Visit the sanctuary of ancient Thrace, the Avas village with its old fortifications, in Trainaoupolis visit the ancient city, the hot springs. In Didimotihon see the old prisons, the Ottoman baths, the old fortress of Petra as well as many other sights.
In Thassos, Thassos city is the capital, with traditional buildings, the walls of the ancient city, the ancient town gates, the ancient theater, the Temple of Hercules, Dionysus, Pan and Neptune, the Roman artefacts and the remarkable archaeological museum. Also visit Drakotrypa cave with stalactites and the Limenas town with the castle ruins, the European-style building Palataki the beaches and the dense forests.
In Kavala, with the capital city of Kavala you can see the harbor, beaches, impressive medieval castle, the Imaret mosque, the house of Mehmet Ali, the arches and the beach and resort Eleftheroupoli. Also, the archaeological site of Philippi has many ancient buildings, the citadel, the Egyptian temple, the ancient theater and many other similar attractions.
Xanthi, with the capital city of Xanthi, which has a substantial and well-preserved old town with old mansions, a Byzantine fortress, the old market and the Folklore Museum. Porto Lagos is a small village beside the lake Vistonida, lots of forests and unspoiled natural beauty. In ancient Avdira you can see the ancient city, home of Democritus, the archaeological museum and the city of Avdira with traditional buildings and the small harbor.
In Rhodope, visit the capital city of Komotini, the Municipal Zoo in the garden, the tower of the clock Imaret, the Armenian Quarter and the city's museums. In Maronia see the archaeological site of the cave of the Cyclops, and the new village with traditional houses and beaches. Also visit the seaside resort of Fanari and forest Nymphaia.
The average temperature in East Makedonia-Thrace range from 7 degrees Celsius (45F) in January to 26 degrees (79F) during July and August. The Winter Tourism runs mainly from October to March.
In the area you can arrive by plane at the airports of Kavala, Alexandroupolis, or via Athens or Thessaloniki airports.
